Quick answer
A WhatsApp QR code holds a click to chat link: https://wa.me/ followed by your full international number, plus an optional pre-filled message after ?text=. Scanning it opens a chat with you, message ready to send. In Playxoft's free WhatsApp QR code generator, type your number with its country code and a message, test the link, and download the code as PNG or SVG. No account needed, and the code never expires.
- Official wa.me format

How does a WhatsApp QR code work?
WhatsApp's click to chat feature opens a chat with any number from a link, without saving the number as a contact first. The QR code simply holds that link:
https://wa.me/447700900123
https://wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi!%20Is%20the%20table%20for%20two%20free%20tonight%3FWhatsApp asks for "a full phone number in international format" and to "omit any zeroes, brackets, or dashes": wa.me/15551234567 is right, while wa.me/+001-(555)1234567 is not. The message after ?text= is URL-encoded, so spaces become %20 and emoji turn into UTF-8 bytes. The person who scans still taps send, and can edit the message first, so nothing is sent without their say.
How do I write my number in international format?
Start with the country code, then the number without the trunk 0 you dial at home. Leave out +, 00, spaces, dashes and brackets; the generator removes them for you and shows the result:
| Country | Dialed at home | International | In the link |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | (202) 555-0143 | +1 202 555 0143 | 12025550143 |
| United Kingdom | 07700 900123 | +44 7700 900123 | 447700900123 |
| India | 098765 43210 | +91 98765 43210 | 919876543210 |
| Italy (landline) | 06 1234 5678 | +39 06 1234 5678 | 390612345678 |
Italy is the classic exception: its landline numbers keep the 0 after the country code. A "(0)" written after the country code, as in +44 (0)20, is only dialed inside the country, so it is dropped. International numbers have at most 15 digits, and no country code starts with 0, so the generator rejects a number that still does.
What makes a good pre-filled message?
Write the first message your customer would send, in their words: "Hi! I'd like to book a table for two tonight" beats "Contact us". A clear opener gets more replies started and saves you a round of "How can I help?".
Add where the code was scanned, such as "(menu, table 4)" or "(spring flyer)". Every chat then tells you which poster, product or table brought it, which is campaign tracking without any analytics. Keep it to a sentence or two: the message is part of the code, and a long one makes it denser and harder to scan from a distance.
Should I use the QR code or the wa.me link?
Use both, each where it fits. The QR code is for moments when the person is looking at something physical or at another screen: a shop window, a table tent, packaging, a delivery bag, a business card, a slide at an event, or your website on a desktop computer.
On a phone, a code on the same screen cannot be scanned, so give mobile visitors the link instead: a "Chat on WhatsApp" button on your site, in your email signature or in your social bio. The generator builds the exact wa.me link alongside the code, so copy it from the Encoded text panel and use the same message in both places.
Is it safe to put my WhatsApp number in a QR code?
The code reveals your number to anyone who scans it, the same as printing it. For a business, use a dedicated WhatsApp Business number rather than a personal one. A static code cannot be switched off, so print it with a number you plan to keep.
The WhatsApp Business app can also make a short link and QR code under its business tools, with a default message you can change later. Use this generator when you want the plain wa.me link for any number, your own message, your own colors and logo, and SVG files for print. The number and message stay in your browser while you work.
