Wall-clock time per request, including time spent waiting on databases and APIs. Lambda, Cloud Run and Azure Functions bill this time.

Memory given to each function. Lambda bills it exactly, Google Cloud adds CPU in proportion, and Azure's Consumption plan rounds up to 128 MB steps (up to 1.5 GB). Cloudflare Workers get 128 MB.

Only Cloudflare Workers bill CPU time rather than duration. An API that mostly waits on a database might use 5–20 ms of CPU even if it takes 200 ms.

What are the key differences between AWS and Azure?

  • Servers. An m6i.large and a D2s v5 (2 vCPU, 8 GB) cost the same per hour in every region this calculator covers, and so do the larger general-purpose sizes. EC2 bills per second; Azure VMs per minute.
  • Disks. EBS gp3 is billed per GB; Azure Premium SSD is billed at the smallest size tier that fits, so a 50 GB disk is billed as 64 GiB.
  • Serverless. Lambda and Azure Functions (Consumption plan) have the same free allowance (1 million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds), but Azure bills at least 100 ms per execution.
  • Databases. RDS Multi-AZ and Azure's zone-redundant HA both roughly double the database cost; Azure's HA carries a 99.99% SLA, RDS Multi-AZ 99.95%.
  • Commitments. Both offer up to 72% off for reserved capacity (AWS Savings Plans, Azure Reserved Instances).

Should you choose AWS or Azure?

Choose AWS if

  • you want per-GB disks and per-second billing for short-lived servers
  • you build serverless-first with Lambda and DynamoDB
  • you need a region or service only AWS offers

Choose Azure if

  • your company runs on Microsoft 365, Entra ID or .NET and wants one vendor
  • you need the 99.99% SLA of zone-redundant managed PostgreSQL
  • you serve heavy traffic from North America or Europe, where Azure egress costs slightly less per GB

Where do these prices come from?

Both sides use the provider's own published price list, read on October 14, 2026, for the same region, with the always-free allowances applied.

Prices are in US dollars, on-demand, for Linux, with no commitments. Every figure on this page is generated from the same price snapshot as the calculator, and automated tests check each claim whenever the prices change. A month is 730 hours and 1 TB is 1,024 GB. Providers change prices from time to time, so for a purchase decision confirm the final figure in the provider's console.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on usage. In US East with the always-free allowances applied, a month: a small SaaS app, $316.04 on Azure and $304.15 on AWS; a mobile app backend, $103.80 on Azure and $84.63 on AWS; a media app, $1,012.10 on Azure and $1,052.80 on AWS. AWS is cheaper for a mobile app backend in all 12 regions the calculator covers. Your own usage can change the answer, so price it in the calculator on this page.
AWS and Azure list the same hourly price for general-purpose Intel VMs (m6i and Dsv5), and both offer up to 72% off with commitments. The differences are in the details: Azure bills disks by size tier and VMs per minute, AWS bills disks per GB and VMs per second, and their database, serverless and egress prices differ.
For general-purpose Intel servers, yes: an m6i.large and a D2s v5 (2 vCPU, 8 GB) both cost $0.096 an hour in US East, $70.08 a month, and the larger m6i and Dsv5 sizes match in all 12 regions this calculator covers. Burstable sizes (t3 and B-series) can differ by a fraction of a cent, and disks are billed differently.
Slightly, in North America and Europe. After the free 100 GB a month that both include, Azure charges $0.087 per GB in East US against $0.09 on AWS in us-east-1, for roughly the first 10 TB.
Both sides use official list prices for AWS us-east-1 (N. Virginia) and Azure eastus (East US), read on October 14, 2026, with the always-free allowances and each provider's own billing rules applied. Servers run 730 hours a month on Linux, on-demand. Databases are managed PostgreSQL of comparable size with SSD storage. Storage uses each provider's standard hot tier, and downloads are priced as internet egress. Functions handle one request per instance at a time, and API gateways in front of them are not included. NoSQL costs assume 1 KB items, with Cosmos DB writes indexed off. Taxes, support plans and commitment discounts are not included.
