Quick answer
Three minutes is a standard boxing round, the cook time printed on many cup noodles, and a typical steep for green or black tea. Playxoft's free 3 minute timer is already set: press Start or the Space key and it sounds an alarm at zero, even while you work in another tab on a computer. Name it, and add more timers if you are cooking several things at once.
- Set to 3 minutes
- Alarm rings in background tabs
- Multiple timers
- Six alarm sounds
- Fullscreen focus mode
How to use this 3 minute timer
- 1The timer is already set to 3 minutes. Press Start or the Space key to begin.
- 2Optional: name it (for example "Green tea"), pick an alarm Sound, and turn on Repeat to run it again automatically.
- 3While it runs, use +1 min or the quick chips to adjust, and Focus mode for fullscreen digits.
- 4When the alarm rings, press Dismiss, or Snooze 5 min for more time.
What can you time with a 3 minute timer?
- Tea. Many green teas steep for about 2 to 3 minutes and many black teas for 3 to 5. Three minutes is a safe middle for both; follow the packet if it says otherwise.
- Cup noodles. Many instant cup noodles say three minutes after adding boiling water.
- Boxing rounds. Professional boxing rounds last three minutes, so this is the length to shadowbox or work the bag. For full rounds with rest, use the boxing preset in the interval timer.
- A short breathing break. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy uses a "three-minute breathing space" as a quick reset during the day.
- Speeches and pitches. Many contests and class presentations give each speaker three minutes.
How long should you steep tea?
Steeping time and water temperature vary by tea, and the packet is the best guide. Typical starting points:
| Tea | Water | Steep |
|---|---|---|
| Green | 70 to 80 °C (160 to 175 °F) | 2 to 3 min |
| White | 75 to 85 °C (165 to 185 °F) | 3 to 5 min |
| Oolong | 85 to 95 °C (185 to 205 °F) | 3 to 5 min |
| Black | Just off the boil | 3 to 5 min |
| Herbal | Boiling | 5 to 7 min |
Steeping longer makes tea stronger and, for green and black tea, more bitter. Start with three minutes, taste, and adjust next time with +1 min or a different preset.

How many seconds is 3 minutes?
3 minutes is 180 seconds, or 0.05 of an hour.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Seconds | 180 |
| Minutes | 3 |
| Hours | 0.05 |
| Back to back in one hour | 20 |
| Back to back in one day | 480 |
With Repeat on, this timer goes off 20 times an hour, which makes it a dependable interval reminder.
