Quick answer

Fifty minutes of focus followed by a 10-minute break, the 50/10 rhythm, is the popular long-session alternative to the 25-minute Pomodoro and fits exactly into an hour. It is also a standard college class period and a common counseling session length. Playxoft's free 50 minute timer is already set: press Start or the Space key and it sounds an alarm at zero.

  • Set to 50 minutes
  • Alarm rings in background tabs
  • Multiple timers
  • Six alarm sounds
  • Fullscreen focus mode

How to use this 50 minute timer

  1. 1The timer is already set to 50 minutes. Press Start or the Space key to begin.
  2. 2Optional: name it (for example "Deep work"), pick an alarm Sound, and turn on Repeat to run it again automatically.
  3. 3While it runs, use +1 min or the quick chips to adjust, and Focus mode for fullscreen digits.
  4. 4When the alarm rings, press Dismiss, or Snooze 5 min for more time.

What is a 50 minute timer good for?

  • 50/10 focus blocks. Fifty minutes of deep work and a 10-minute break make a full hour, a rhythm many writers, developers and designers prefer to shorter sessions.
  • College classes. Many universities schedule 50-minute class periods, leaving 10 minutes to change rooms.
  • Professional sessions. Counseling and coaching sessions are often 50 minutes long, leaving time for notes before the next hour.
  • Long study sessions. Fifty minutes is enough for a full section of a practice paper or a chapter of notes.
  • Workouts. A 50-minute session fits a thorough warm-up, a main set and a stretch.

If you often feel you are just getting into the flow when a 25-minute Pomodoro ends, try 50/10. If 50 minutes feels like a slog, step back to 25. Either way, take the break. To run 50/10 automatically, open the Pomodoro timer and set Focus to 50 and Short break to 10.

Tips for using a 50 minute timer

  • Write the task as the timer's name, and keep it to one task per session.
  • Add a 10-minute timer for the break and start it when the alarm rings.
  • Turn on desktop notifications so you see the alarm while working in another app.
  • Need a full hour? Open the 1 hour timer.
