Quick answer

Forty minutes is each half of a rugby union match and the full playing time of a FIBA basketball game, four 10-minute quarters. Many schools also run lessons of about 40 minutes, so it makes a familiar block for homework or a long workout. Playxoft's free 40 minute timer is already set: press Start or the Space key and it sounds an alarm at zero.

  • Set to 40 minutes
  • Alarm rings in background tabs
  • Multiple timers
  • Six alarm sounds
  • Fullscreen focus mode

How to use this 40 minute timer

  1. 1The timer is already set to 40 minutes. Press Start or the Space key to begin.
  2. 2Optional: name it (for example "Study block"), pick an alarm Sound, and turn on Repeat to run it again automatically.
  3. 3While it runs, use +1 min or the quick chips to adjust, and Focus mode for fullscreen digits.
  4. 4When the alarm rings, press Dismiss, or Snooze 5 min for more time.

What is a 40 minute timer used for?

  • Rugby. Each half of a rugby union match lasts 40 minutes.
  • Basketball practice games. FIBA games have four 10-minute quarters, 40 minutes of playing time in total. Add a 10-minute timer for each quarter.
  • School lessons. Many schools run lessons of roughly 40 to 50 minutes, so a 40-minute block feels familiar for homework.
  • Long workouts. A 40-minute run, ride or gym session.
  • Oven dishes. Many casseroles and bakes need 40 minutes or more; check your recipe.

Which sports use 40-minute periods?

NBA basketballFour quarters of 12 minutes48 minutes
Football (soccer)Two halves of 45 minutes90 minutes

Real game clocks stop for fouls, time-outs and other stoppages, so a match takes longer than its playing time. For practice games and small-sided matches, a running 40 minute timer keeps things moving. Add a second timer for half-time, and see the 45 minute timer for football halves.

Tips for using a 40 minute timer

  • Use Focus mode on a tablet at the side of the pitch or court.
  • Pick the Alarm sound outdoors; it is the hardest to miss.
  • Split a 40-minute study block into two halves with a 20-minute timer as a halfway marker.
  • Prefer a longer lesson? Try the 45 minute timer.
