Quick answer

Eight minutes cooks many dried pasta shapes (check the packet) and gives a large egg a firm white with a just-set, creamy yolk. For runners, an 8-minute mile is 7.5 miles per hour. Playxoft's free 8 minute timer is preset and ready: press Start or the Space key and it sounds an alarm at zero. Add a second timer for the sauce.

  • Set to 8 minutes
  • Alarm rings in background tabs
  • Multiple timers
  • Six alarm sounds
  • Fullscreen focus mode

How to use this 8 minute timer

  1. 1The timer is already set to 8 minutes. Press Start or the Space key to begin.
  2. 2Optional: name it (for example "Pasta"), pick an alarm Sound, and turn on Repeat to run it again automatically.
  3. 3While it runs, use +1 min or the quick chips to adjust, and Focus mode for fullscreen digits.
  4. 4When the alarm rings, press Dismiss, or Snooze 5 min for more time.

What is an 8 minute timer used for?

  • Pasta. Many dried pastas cook in roughly 8 to 12 minutes; the packet gives the exact time for each shape.
  • Medium-boiled eggs. About eight minutes in boiling water gives a large egg a firm white and a just-set, creamy yolk.
  • Running pace. An 8-minute mile is 7.5 miles per hour, or about 4:58 per kilometer, a common goal for recreational runners.
  • A focused sprint. Eight minutes of single-task work, such as answering messages, without switching tabs.
  • Cool-downs. Eight minutes of easy walking after a hard run lets your breathing settle.

How do you time pasta perfectly?

  1. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a full, rolling boil.
  2. Add the pasta, stir, and start the timer when the water returns to the boil, not when the pasta goes in.
  3. Taste a minute before the packet time. Al dente pasta is tender with a slight bite in the center.
  4. Save a cup of pasta water before draining; its starch helps the sauce cling.

If you will finish the pasta in the sauce, take it out a minute early, since it keeps cooking in the pan. Press Add timer to time the sauce or garlic bread alongside it.

Tips for using an 8 minute timer

  • Name timers by dish ("Pasta", "Sauce") and give each a different sound.
  • Turn on Keep screen awake when you cook from a phone.
  • Use −1 min while it runs if you want to taste early.
  • Need eight and a half minutes? Type 8:30.
