Quick answer

A Notion moon phase widget shows the Moon's current phase inside a Notion page through an embed block. Playxoft's free moon phase widget draws today's Moon to scale, names the phase, shows how much of it is lit and lists the next full and new moon in your own calendar. It calculates everything in the browser with standard astronomical formulas. Copy the embed link and paste it into /embed in Notion.

  • Drawn to scale
  • Share lit
  • Next full and new moon
  • Northern or Southern view
  • No location needed
  • Five styles

How to use the Notion Moon Phase Widget

  1. 1Choose your Hemisphere, so the lit side matches the sky where you are.
  2. 2Pick what to show: Phase name, Share lit and Next phases.
  3. 3Add an optional Title, choose a style and press Copy embed link.
  4. 4In Notion, type /embed, paste the link and choose Embed link.

What are the phases of the Moon?

The Moon goes from new to full and back in about 29.5 days, the synodic month. As it moves around Earth we see more, then less, of its sunlit half. The widget uses the eight traditional names:

PhaseDays after new moon (about)Share lit
New moon00%
Waxing crescent1 to 61% to 49%
First quarter7.450%
Waxing gibbous8 to 1451% to 99%
Full moon14.8100%
Waning gibbous15 to 2199% to 51%
Last quarter22.150%
Waning crescent23 to 2949% to 1%

New moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter are exact moments. The widget shows those names for about a day either side, the way calendars label the night.

How accurate is the moon phase widget?

The widget calculates new and full moons with the method in Jean Meeus's *Astronomical Algorithms*, the standard reference for this kind of calculation. Its times agree with published almanac times to within a few minutes, and the share lit is within about one percent.

Everything runs in the viewer's browser: no data is downloaded, no location is requested, and the widget keeps working offline once loaded. The dates of the next full and new moon are written in the viewer's own calendar and language. A full moon close to midnight UTC can fall on different dates in different time zones, which is why calendars sometimes disagree by a day.

Why does the hemisphere matter?

Everyone on Earth sees the same phase at the same moment, but not the same picture. From the Northern Hemisphere, a waxing Moon is lit on the right and a waning Moon on the left. From the Southern Hemisphere, in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or Argentina, it is the other way around, because you are looking at the Moon upside down compared with a viewer in Europe.

Near the equator the crescent lies on its side, like a bowl. Pick the hemisphere you are closest to; the phase name, the share lit and the dates stay the same either way.

Ideas for a moon widget in Notion

  • Moon journal: note how you feel or sleep through each cycle, with the phase at the top of the page.
  • Stargazing and photography: the darkest skies are around the new moon, when faint stars and the Milky Way are easiest to see.
  • Garden planner: many gardeners follow moon-planting traditions; keep the phase beside your sowing calendar.
  • Coast and tides: the largest tides, called spring tides, come shortly after the new and full moon.
  • Pair it: with the calendar widget for the month and the clock for the time.

Frequently asked questions

Choose your hemisphere and a style in Playxoft's moon phase builder and press Copy embed link. In Notion, type /embed, press Enter, paste the link and choose Embed link.
The preview on this page shows it live: today's phase, how much of the Moon is lit and the dates of the next full and new moon, calculated for the current moment.
About every 29.5 days, so most months have one full moon and some have two. The widget lists the date of the next full moon in the viewer's own calendar.
No. The phase is the same everywhere on Earth at a given moment, so the widget needs no location and never asks for one. You only choose the hemisphere for the picture.
From the Southern Hemisphere you see the Moon upside down compared with the north, so a waxing crescent is lit on the left. Choose Southern under Hemisphere to draw it that way.
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limits. The small Made with Playxoft link in the corner can be turned off.
